TOWNIES
ADVANCE IN JUNIOR VARSITY STATE PLAYOFFS
The East Providence junior
varsity baseball team has moved into the quarter-final round of the
state tournament. East Providence has defeated Saint
Raphael's, Lincoln, and Cranston West to secure the first seed in
this week's tournament. The Townies finished the regular season in
first place at 8-2 and have been led all season by solid pitching by
Justin Adams, Joe Whalen, Curtis Potter, Nick Lundstrom, and Mike
Mercier. In Friday's game Joe Whalen, Andrew Boisvert, and
Nate Lovett all homered and Shane McNamara had three hits and three
runs batted in. Justin Adams and Mike Mercier combined to hold
Cranston West to one run on five hits. Nick Lundstrom
continued his stellar play in center field. The Townies look
to advance again on Tuesday against North Providence. The game
will be played at home at 3:30.

TOWNIES BATTER RAMS TO WIN SEASON
FINALE
East Providence played its
most complete game of the season in the season's final game.
The Townies got great pitching from Miles Bonalewicz and Mike
Mercier, timely hitting by David Valley and Rich Fonseca, and
exceptional defense all day long which enabled them to beat LaSalle
Academy 7-2. Fonseca's bases loaded triple in the sixth sealed
the deal and Mike Mercier silenced the Ram bats through the final
three frames. David Valley finished with two hits and a season
batting average of .489.

BONALEWICZ PITCHES TOWNIES TO
UPSET WIN OF FALCONS
East Providence won a must win game
Tuesday afternoon at Pierce Field. Miles Bonalewicz pitched a
complete game (nine innings), scattered eight hits and walked only
one and David Valley had three hits and two runs batted in.
Nick Lundstrom drew a bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom
of the ninth to secure the Townies' fifth win and keep their playoff
hopes alive. East Providence will try to keep their modest two
game win streak alive Thursday night at Cranston Stadium against
Cranston East.

TOWNIES TAME CHARGERS, WHALEN STARS
ON HILL AND AT PLATE
East Providence defeated Chariho 6-2
behind the pitching and hitting of sophomore Joe Whalen.
Whalen pitched six strong innings and hit a triple, single, and
drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Rich Fonseca continued
his hot hitting with two more hits and Shane McNamara drove in a run
with a sacrifice fly. Nick Lundstrom was on base three times
for the Townies including a single that sparked a Townie rally.

OAKERS TOP TOWNIES IN GAME
WITH PLAYOFF CONSEQUENCES
East Providence dug themselves a
further hole Monday at Pierce Field when they dropped a key contest
against Coventry. Both teams are battling for the playoffs and
the Townies laid an egg. East Providence wasted a complete
game pitching effort from Senior Miles Bonalewicz and coughed up two
unearned runs including the game winner. East Providence could
muster only five hits on the day and left five runners in scoring
position. David Valley had an RBI double and Andrew Boisvert
drove in the
other Townie run with a two out single. Shane McNamara stole
two bases for East Providence.

TOWNIES COME UP SHORT AGAINST
PILGRIM
East Providence blew leads of 2-0,
3-2, and 6-3 and left the tying run on third in the top of the
seventh yesterday as they fell to Pilgrim 8-7. David Valley
doubled, singled, and drove in three runs and Allen Winter drove in
three with a base clearing double, but seven runs and thirteen
hits were not enough to overcome a costly three run error and shaky
pitching. Joe Whalen continued to be red hot at the plate with
three more hits and David Amoroso and Rich Fonseca contributed two
hits apiece.

TOWNIES ROUT PATRIOTS IN INJURY FUND
CONTEST
East Providence scored seven
runs in the third inning and never looked back as they beat
Portsmouth 11-4 Monday afternoon at Portsmouth. Allen Winter
homered, tripled, singled and drove in four runs, and in an
unprecedented move was pinch hit for before he had a chance to
complete the cycle. When asked why he removed Winter, Coach
Amore responded "He looked exhausted after all that running, I
didn't want him to get hurt." Joe Whalen, Bill Tilley, David
Valley, and Shane McNamara all had multiple hit games and Curtis
Potter went four strong innings for the win. East Providence

HAWKS SOAR PAST TOWNIES
Justin "Gomez" Adams held the
nationally ranked Bishop Hendricken Hawks to one earned run over
four and a third innings at Pierce Field on Friday afternoon, but
the Townies succumbed to sloppy defense and a sluggish offensive
effort. East Providence's two game winning streak was halted
as Hendricken pulled away in the final two frames for an 8-0
victory. Adams kept the Hawks at bay with an array of off
speed pitches and good location on his fastball but the Hawks
offense took advantage of Townie miscues and cruised to a misleading
8-0 victory. East Providence will try and get back to their
winning ways on Monday in a non league game at Portsmouth.

TOWNIES UPEND TITANS WITH COME FROM BEHIND WIN
East Providence overcame a
three run first inning deficit and rode the solid pitching of Miles
Bonalewicz to a 5-3 victory over Tollgate. Bonalewicz
scattered four hits over five innings and struck out three. He
has won his last two decisions and not given up an earned run.
David Valley continued his torrid hitting with a two run double and
a single. Andrew Boisvert drove in two runs and made a
tremendous running catch in the first inning to get the Townies out
of further trouble. Shane McNamara drove in the Townies' other
run with a fielder's choice RBI groundout. Mike Mercier picked
up his first save of the season with two innings of solid relief.
East Providence has now won two out of its last three games and
continues to play solid defense.

Lions
top Townies in seventh
East Providence came up a
little short on Thursday afternoon at Lincoln as the Lions plated
one in the seventh to leave the Townies on the field with their
sixth loss of the season. David Valley, Rich Fonseca, Allen
Winter, and Andrew Boisvert each had two hits and the Townies saw
leads of 3-0 and 6-3 evaporate as a combination of Jay Dumont and
Mike Mercier could not hold down the Lion offense. East
Providence once again played a solid defensive game.

Rams pin third loss on
Townies in heartbreaking fashion
East
Providence did everything but win on Monday afternoon at LaSalle
Academy. The Townies pitched well, made some stellar plays in
the field, and made solid contact at the plate for most of the cold
day. Mike Mercier, in his first varsity start, gave the
Townies five solid innings while yielding only three hits and
striking out four. David Valley had two hits and an RBI and
Shane McNamara continued his hot start with a game tying single in
the fifth inning. Miles Bonalewicz pitched very well in relief
and Allen Winter was solid behind the plate. In the East
Providence half of the fifth, James Dumont hit a long drive to deep
right center field and it appeared the Townies would clear the
loaded bases and gain a commanding three run lead, but the LaSalle
right fielder made an outstanding diving catch and ended the Townie
threat. East Providence committed a costly error in the bottom
of the seventh which allowed the winning run to cross the plate for
the Rams.

Season Preview
The 2005 East Providence High School
baseball team will take to the field this season with a nice mix of
veteran talent and impressive newcomers. Senior (2004
All-Division selection) catcher
Allen Winter highlights an offensive
attack that returns four .300 hitters. Included in that group
are junior first baseman David Valley,
who led the 2004 Townies in RBI, senior center fielder David
Amoroso, and senior second baseman
Rich Fonseca who hit over .400
in last season's state playoffs. Senior first baseman/DH
Bill Tilley, one of the
Townies hottest hitters during the second half of last year hopes to
pick up right where he left off and provide production from the
middle of the order. Sophomore Andrew Boisvert
will take over at short and freshman Gary
Levesque returns to play
third. Levesque homered three times as a freshman and Boisvert
brings great athleticism to the middle infield. The outfield
is one of the most athletic and well armed in recent years.
Anchored by Amoroso in center, the outfield also features clutch
hitting left fielder Eric Wedekind and newcomers
Nick Lundstrom and
James Dumont sharing right field
duties. Back up catcher and all around utility man
Charles Manning will be counted on in
a number of roles and is expected to provide some pop in the middle
of the order. Speedy sophomores Justin Barros
and Shane McNamara
should see time in the middle infield
and as pinch runners and juniors Matt Mongeon
and Brian Partington
provide depth and experience off the bench. The Townie
pitching corps is led by crafty senior Miles Bonalewicz,
last season's third starter, and talented right hander James
Dumont. Junior Mike
Mercier fills out the starting
rotation after an impressive summer in Connie Mack, and sophomores
Justin "Gomez" Adams,
Joey Whalen, and Nick
Lundstrom provide solid depth in the
bullpen. Junior Curtis Potter
and senior Dennis Boyd should
see innings in both middle and long relief. Sophomores Ryan
Gorham and Scott Breault
provide depth at second base and catcher respectively.
The Townies will dedicate this season to the memory of teammate
Brian Lundstrom and will wear
his number 3 on their right
sleeve throughout the season.
December 2004
*The Townie Baseball Team mourns the loss of
Brian Lundstrom,
a great teammate, a great friend, and a great competitor. Our
deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Lundstrom family. The number "3" will be worn on the Townie uniform
for the entire 2005 season in memory of Brian.
