Skippers tighten I-South race
By BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
EAST PROVIDENCE -- As she pitched herself through yesterday's Division I-South game against East Providence, North Kingstown freshman right-hander Maggie Feix kept up a mental conversation with herself. "I just said, 'You're going to do it, Maggie. You can do it.' " What Feix did yesterday was to notch her fourth league win in five starts while helping her club to a 7-4 victory over the previously-unbeaten Townies at Pierce Field. The win puts North Kingstown's record at 5-2, while the league-leading Townies dropped to 6-1.
"I think I stayed with it well," said Feix, who struck out four and walked three in going the distance. She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate. She scored two runs, drove in two -- including a fourth-inning solo homer -- and added two singles. "I felt I did pretty good (at the plate)," Feix said. "I was pumped." East Providence committed four errors yesterday, three in the costly category. The Skippers committed two errors, and were outhit by East Providence, 8-7. "North Kingstown outplayed us in every facet of the game," said Rob Traverse, the Townies' head coach. "(Fiex) pitched a great game. She had great poise for a freshman." For the Townies, senior righty Ashley Stringfellow hurled five frames, fanning four and walking none. She was relieved in the sixth by junior Stephanie Normand, who struck out two in her brief stint. After 21/2 scoreless frames, the Townies put two runs on the board. Jocelyn Nestell led off with a single and came home on Katrina Finona's double to left. Finona crossed the plate on a Stringfellow single to center. North Kingstown cut that lead in half with Feix' long home run to right in the fourth inning. The Townies made it 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Stringfellow bunted her way onto first and reached second on a wild pitch. Katie Deschenes reached on a fielder's choice, and both came home when Jullian Berg reached on a two-base infield error. But the Skippers took the lead with a four-run sixth, the highlights of which were Jessica Williams's RBI triple and a two-run double off the bat of senior Kim Harnoff.  With the score 4-4, Hornoff stole third and scored on a passed ball. For insurance, the Skippers put two more runs across in the top of the seventh. Jeannie Records -- safe on an infield miscue -- stole second, moved to third on Jocelyn Avila's sacrifice bunt and scored when Williams's infield hit was misplayed. Williams subsequently came home on Feix' single to the gap in center."It was such a gratifying thing," Fiex said of yesterday's victory. "We held our heads high and were persistent."

Division leaders responded well to rare setbacks

If you want to be a champion, you have to bounce back off the mat when somebody puts you down.

When the division-leading East Providence and North Providence saw their unbeaten streaks come to end, they both bounced back win victories.

Cumberland sent Division I-North leader North Providence to its first loss behind Christine Boutiette 's shutout pitching, but the Cougars' slugging catcher Lauren Florio wouldn't let them stay down.

                     On Friday, Florio smacked a tie-breaking, inside-the-park
home run in the top of the sixth that beat Bay View, 3-2,
then drilled a line drive off the scoreboard at Notte Park,
for a two-run homer against Lincoln on Saturday.

Florio's fourth homer of the season sparked the Cougars
to a 3-1 win over the Lions in the battle for first place in
front of a big crowd at Notte Park.

In addition to Florio's heroics --she now has 17 RBI -- the
Cougars got more solid pitching from Jamie Plamondon
and great defense from its middle infielders, Jessica Milo
at second and shortstop Kyrissa Wright. They turned
their third double play of the season against Bay View.

The Lions host North Providence in a rematch today at
Lincoln. The Lions are hanging tough despite losing
All-State shortstop Jolene Yankee with mononucleosis
after the third game of the season.

"We are still trying to get over her loss," Lincoln head coach Dave Enos said. "The girls keep asking, 'When she is coming back?' " Enos said.

The answer? Hopefully before the playoffs begin.

Without Yankee and despite an offense that has trouble scoring -- only four runs in games against North Providence, Cumberland and St. Raphael -- the Lions are still getting the job done. Courtney Lemoie and Kendra Simpson are a couple of hard-throwing hurlers who benefit from Lincoln's strong defense. Jade Corderre is playing well, filling in for Yankee at shortstop.

Defending division champ Cumberland, which lost several key players to graduation, has rebuilt nicely around Boutiette and the Malloy triplets, Meghan, Kate and Sarah. After shutting down North Providence last week, they are ready for the stretch run.

The Clippers showed that yesterday when Boutiette fired a one-hitter, struck out eight and handed Lincoln its second straight loss, 3-1, at Tucker Field.

Cumberland head coach Jerry Ethier says Boutiette has been brilliant this season.
"She pitched well all year, hasn't had a bad game, just a couple of tough-luck loses.
We lost a lot of people last year, but we are coming around," he said. Sophomore catcher Jocelyn Nestell has been getting it done for East Providence, which has won five straight after losing its first game to North Kingstown, 7-4, a couple of weeks ago.

Nestell, hitting .447, slugged a two-run homer, and had five RBI in the Townies' 12-2 win over second-place Pilgrim on Saturday. The Townies edged the Patriots, 6-5 in nine innings in their first meeting.

Yesterday, the Townies blanked East Greenwich, 6-0, behind the one-hit pitching of Stephanie Normand to improve to 11-1 and stay two games ahead of North Kingstown and Pilgrim in I-South. Normand fanned 11.

"It has been a big turn-around," East Providence head coach Rob Traverse said.
"The kids are refocusing. When you are in first place, everybody gets up for you."
