High School Sports
East Providence is a team on a mission this year
04/16/2002
Still smarting
from a first-round elimination in the playoffs last
season, and with a dedication to the team that leads
players to miss family trips, East Providence has
run up an undefeated record in Division I-South.
The Townies
nearly suffered their first loss yesterday, going 14
innings against Chariho before escaping with a 2-1
win. Starting pitcher Amanda Shattuck, a freshman,
struck out 16 Chargers batters in 112/3 innings, and
senior co-captain Andrea Medeiros hit a triple to
start the 14th and later scored the winning run on
an error. It is Shattuck who is missing out on a
school-vacation trip to Disney World this week,
saying that she made a commitment to her team and
wanted to honor it.
Coach Rob
Traverse said it's that kind of decision that makes
it easy and fun to lead this team.
Looking at the
boxscores, it seems as though offense is East
Providence's forte, but Traverse said pitching and
defense are really the Townies' strengths, as
evidenced by their four shutouts in six games.
Senior lefty
pitcher Stephanie Normand has been starting for
three years. (She, Medeiros, Katrina Finona and
catcher Jocelyn Nestell are sharing the captain
duties this season.)
Nestall, a
junior, has been one of the Townies' most consistent
hitters over the last three years, and Traverse said
left fielder Finona "can flat-out hit." Medeiros,
the center fielder, hits from the leadoff spot, and
is integral to the team's offensive success.
"As she goes,
the offense goes," Traverse said. "She steals a lot
of bases, she makes things happen. When she's on
base, that's good for us."
Junior first
baseman Ali Birkes is off to a strong start at the
plate, while sophomore shortstop Marissa Savastano
is a defensive standout. The cleanup hitter is
junior Jillian Berg, who patrols the hot corner.
Right-field
duties are split between senior Kelly Deschenes and
sophomore Danielle Normand. Senior Ciara Charbonneau
serves as designated hitter.
Last year, the
Townies went 17-3 and were awarded the top seed in
the state tournament, but were upset by Portsmouth,
a team they had beaten twice during the regular
season.
While they
graduated All-State pitcher/outfielder Ashley
Stringfellow and first baseman Marcia Hustalen, who
is now playing at URI, and three other players,
Traverse said there are enough players who saw
significant time last season and remember the hurt
they felt in the playoffs last year.
"They talk about
it often -- they're hungry. They're just as intense,
and they do remember what it felt like to be knocked
out early," he said.
He added that
the players know they have to take care of business,
especially when there are so many good teams, teams
that could beat them on any given day.
Tomorrow they
face just such a squad, the also undefeated Skippers
at North

May 15- East Providence at Chariho
Chargers rally, retain share of
A-South lead
05/16/2002
BY ROBERT LEE
Journal Sports Writer
RICHMOND -- East
Providence is the only team to put a blemish on
Chariho's record this season -- and that in a
14-inning marathon. Yesterday's rematch would be
another close contest, decided in the final at-bat.
Chariho's Stacy Celani hit a
walkoff single that drove in Colleen Gill to win it
4-3, as Chariho improved to 14-1 in league play,
15-1 overall, and kept pace atop A-South with North
Kingstown, which also has only one loss. East
Providence drops to 10-4 (12-4 overall) and is in
third place in A-South.
"She's come on
strong the last couple of games," Chariho coach Bill
Capalbo said of Celani, who had three RBI. "She got
three hits yesterday and had three today. She's
hitting the ball hard."
The game was a
pitchers' duel early on as the Chargers' Jill Kiley
and the Townies' Amanda Shattuck overpowered
opposing batters through the first three innings.
Kiley (10 strikeouts in five innings) struck out
seven of the first nine
Townies. On Tuesday, Kiley pitched
a 16-strikeout no-hitter against Middletown. It was
her third straight no-hitter this season and fourth
overall. Shattuck pitched a complete game, fanning
10 and scattering seven hits. "I felt OK out there
but they have good hitters," Kiley said after the
game. "I was doing OK but I didn't have my best
stuff. But this was a big game. We finally beat the
only team that beat us."
"Jill might not
have had her best stuff today but she battled like
crazy," Capalbo said. "Then we brought (Audrey)
Poulton in and she is more than capable of doing a
good job." Poulton was credited with the win.
"Amanda pitched well enough to win," East Providence
coach Rob Traverse said. "But Chariho is a good
team."
Kiley and
Shattuck each had a no-hitter through three innings
as each used a blinding fastball and a mean changeup
to frustrate opposing hitters, but both squads' bats
came alive in the fourth.
East Providence
struck first in the top of the fourth when leadoff
hitter Andrea Medeiros broke up Kiley's bid for a
no-hitter with a bloop single to right. Medeiros
went to second and third on a wild pitch and scored
on a Danielle Normand grounder to first.
Jocelyn Nestell
singled to left field, and Alison Birkes reached
first on a fielder's-choice bunt back to the pitcher
on which Normand was thrown out at third. Jillian
Berg reached first on a fielder's choice to load the
bases and Kelly Deschenes brought in Nestell and
Birkes with a double to left that gave East
Providence a 3-0 advantage.
Chariho answered
with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gill
reached on an error; Kiley was walked and Celani
drove in Gill with a single down the first-base
line. Kiley crossed home on a Nicole Kennedy single.
Chariho eventually loaded the bases with no outs but
Shattuck struck out the next three batters.
The Chargers
made it 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Julia
Moseley singled to right and East Providence right
fielder Steph Normand misplayed the ball for a
two-base error as Moseley ended up on third. Moseley
scored on a Celani single to right and Celani's
walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh won the
game for Chariho.
