2003 Round-up

Rams Upset Townies 4-0; EP Out of Playoffs
For the second straight playoff game, the Townie bats proved to be their Achilles heel as only Jillian Berg ( 2 hits and BB) and Nicole Durand (single) were able to put hits on the board.  After six scoreless innings, LaSalle scored four in the top of the 7th off tough luck loser Amanda Shattuck.  In the seventh,  a single surrounded by a hit batsman and three EP errors caused the four run deficit, a number that the anemic EP hitting could not overcome.  East Providence finished the season with a 14-6 record.  Jillian Berg completed her senior year with the third highest batting average in Townie history at .442.

Cougars Send Townies To Loser's Bracket
As has been the case for the past three weeks, the Townie bats were silent as North Providence defeated EP in the second round of the playoffs 3-1.  The Cougars got the most out of their three hits as they hit back to back singles in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish.  East Providence put runners on second and third with one out and down 3-1 in the fifth inning but could not push across another run.  Jill Berg, who carried the offense all year, had the lone hit for the Townies.  For some inexplicable reason, EP played lethargically for the first four innings digging themselves a hole that they could not climb out of.  EP, the third seed plays LaSalle the eighth seed, in the loser's bracket on Saturday.

Skippers Outlast Townies 1-0 in Eight Innings
On Senior Day in front of a good size crowd, the Townies played their hearts out but came up short in the end to an excellent North Kingstown team 1-0 in 8 innings.  Freshman Michaela Johnson started in place of the ill Amanda Shattuck for the second straight game and frustrated the Skipper hitters all day.  The Townie defense led by Marissa Savastano, Ali Birkes, and Nicole Durand was once again superb making big play after big play.  EP left a runner on third base four times during the game as did the Skippers.  Maggie Feix showed why she is one of the top pitchers' in the state as she struck out 10 Townies and three of them in crucial situations.  Both EP and NK finished with records of 13-3 and will find out their seedings on Saturday.  Offensively, Danielle Normand stung the ball three times for the Townies ending her day 1 for 3.  EP will host a playoff game at Pierce Field tentatively set for June 4th,  and has finished a top four seed in the state for the fourth time in 5 years.

Johnson, Nestell, Normand Get Townies Back On Track
Freshman Michaela Johnson made her first varsity start on the mound a memorable one as she allowed two runs on five hits en route to her first win.  Backed by hitting from Jocelyn Nestell, who returned from her second knee surgery in as many seasons, Danielle Normand, and Molly Hawksley, the Townies returned to their winning ways.  Nestell went 2-2 with a double and 2 RBI while Normand was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI.  Hawksley added a 3-run triple as the Townies sent 10 runs across the plate.  Marissa Savastano made a number of dazzling defensive plays at shortstop for the Townies, getting them out of a few jams.  The Townies can claim their second division title in three years with a win over NK on Thursday.

Fuoroli, Pilgrim Knock Townies Out Of First Place
Erin Fuoroli allowed a leadoff walk to Marissa Savastano to start the game and then was perfect for the rest of the closely matched contest.  The Pilgrim ace no-hit the Townies while grabbing sole possession of first place and into the driver's seat for the I-South division title.  Lyndsay Cavanaugh had a two out double in the third inning driving the only run the Patriots would need.  Amanda Shattuck was the hard luck loser allowing 5 hits and two earned runs.  EP dropped its second game of the week as the offense is mired in a slump.  The Townies only have one legitimate hit in their last two games.

Chariho Humbles Townies With Mercy Rule
Jill Kiley threw a two-hitter and struck out eight Townies giving EP their first loss of the regular season in a convincing fashion.  Chariho had six hits and took advantage of four Townie errors in the third and fourth innings as they rolled over the EP.  Stacy Celani had a two run homerun for the Chargers.  The mercy rule was used against the Townies for the first time since records have been kept starting in 1999.  EP is now tied for first place with Pilgrim who is also 12-1.

Berg's Homerun Lifts Townies Over Westerly
Jillian Berg continued her torrid hitting as her two-run homerun in the 7th inning erased a 3-1 deficit and sent the game into extra frames.  In the 8th inning,  Ali Birkes hit a long two-out double and after Danielle Normand walked, Amanda Shattuck's ground ball between the third baseman and shortstop was misplayed allowing Birkes to score from second base with the game winning run.  Berg also drove in the Townies first run with a two-out single in the fourth inning.  Amanda Shattuck allowed one earned run and struck out 11 for EP.  The Townies improved to 12-0 in league play, their best start ever.

Townies Team Effort Downs Oakers
A bunch of Townies had a hand in the convincing win over the Knotty Oakers at Pierce Field on Monday.  Amanda Shattuck was steady if not excellent again allowing only 2 hits while striking out 9 batters.  Shattuck also hit a bomb to left producing a two-run double in the Townie fourth.  Danielle Normand went 3-4 at the plate, hitting the ball hard all four times and freshman Liz Mellen continued swinging a hot bat as she had two hits including a double, stolen base and a run scored.  Ali Birkes and Ali Huftalen chipped in with RBI singles as well.  Leadoff hitter, Marissa Savastano had a typical catalyst's day with a hit, 2 BB's, a stolen base and two runs scored.  The Townie defense was solid as usual with Jill Berg, Normand, Savastano, Birkes and Molly Hawksley leading the way.  EP upped their league record to 10-0.

Cougars Stop Townies Win Streak At Nine

North Providence scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings by taking advantage of six walks, four wild pitches and a timely double.  The Cougars who are always one of the top teams in the state ran the bases well as usual and made the most of everything given to them.  EP out hit North Providence 8 to 2 but left 11 runners stranded on base.  Marissa Savastano led the Townies with two hits and Laura King was 1-2 and scored the lone Townie run.  The Townies begin the second half of the regular season on Wednesday at Barrington.

Jill Berg hit a grand slam homerun in the top of the first inning and Molly Hawksley hit an RBI triple in the third inning giving Amanda Shattuck all the run support she would need.  Shattuck held the powerful Skippers to one hit and 0 earned runs while striking out seven.  EP had six hits with Berg having two.  Laura King, Marissa Savastano, and Shattuck had the other hits for the Townies.  Although making some excellent plays, the Townie defense uncharacteristically made four errors on the day.  EP's record improved to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in league play as the first half of the season came to a close.

Townies turn in lackluster Performance- Normand/Shattuck Throw No Hitter!!
It took a while but the Townies scored 3 runs in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth to overcome a 1-0 deficit after the first inning.  Molly Hawksley had two hits and 3 RBI while Marissa Savastano went 1 for 1 with 2 BB's, 1 run and a stolen base.  After South Kingstown jumped out to a 1-0 lead due to some early jitters from spot starter Danielle Normand, Amanda Shattuck returned to the mound in the second inning and held the Rebels hitless to complete EP's second no hitter.  Nicole Durand had her first varsity hit for the Townies.  Overall, it was not the Townies' best effort.  A better effort will be needed when they visit defending state champion North Kingstown on Wednesday.

Big Win for EP On Birkes' Big Hit
Ali Birkes hit a two out RBI single in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring Laura King with the winning run completing the comeback win for the Townies.  King had two hits in her first varsity start for EP.  Amanda Shattuck and Erin Fuoroli were outstanding on the mound for their respective teams.  Shattuck finished with 13 strikeouts allowing only 3 hits to Pilgrim's potent lineup.  Both teams showed character as EP took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 6th.  However, Pilgrim tied the game in the 7th and took the lead in the 8th.  In the bottom of the frame Murphie Chappell led off with a walk and pinch runner Michaela Johnson stole second base.  King followed with her second hit moving Johnson to third.  Marissa Savastano lined out to second and an errant throw to third allowed Johnson to score and King to move to third.  Birkes' hit followed!!   An excellent team win!!

Townies No-Hit and Win?
Two of the best teams in the state with two of the best pitchers in the state squared off at Pierce Field for what was expected, a pitcher's duel.  In the bottom of the 7th with two outs, Jill Berg walked, stole second, moved to third on an infield error and scored on the ensuing play, another infield error giving the Townies an exciting 1-0 win.  Amanda Shattuck limited the talented Chargers to two hits while striking out 11 batters.  Shattuck pitched her way out of three difficult jams as Chariho threatened to score often.  Chariho's Jill Kiley was the hard luck loser as she pitched a no hitter and struck out 8 Townies.  Ali Birkes made the play of the game at first saving two runs and the victory for EP.

Shattuck Strikes out 17
Amanda Shattuck was once again dominating.  The sophomore allowed only one hit while striking out 17 Coventry hitters en route to her fifth win of the year and third shutout.  The Townies' offense struck early as Marissa Savastano (2 hits, SB), Jocelyn Nestell (2-3, 2B), and Jill Berg (2-3, SB) all led EP to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. That was all Shattuck would need.  Danielle Normand continued her hot hitting with two hits as well.  Marissa Savastano made a great defensive play in the first inning for the Townies.

The first scrimmage of the season looked very much what it was, the first scrimmage of the season.  Too many mental errors and a lack of hitting (10 strikeouts) was all too evident in the first outing for the Townies.  EP looks to improve their effort against Classical on Wednesday.
