North Kingstown vs. East Providence (Notte Park)
EP Ousted From
Tournament in 12 Innings
Only 24 hours
after eliminating LaSalle in 16 innings, the Townie Softball
Team had to work overtime again. This time, however, the
ending wasn't as happy. Amanda Shattuck pitched arguably
the best game in her illustrious Townie career, but was the
tough luck loser. The Townies threatened numerous times but
could not get the timely hit. Pitcher Maggie Feix escaped
jam after jam for NK. EP out hit NK 8 to 3 but fell victim
to two defensive errors in the 12th that led to the unearned
run for the Skippers. Molly Hawksley and Amanda Shattuck
had two hits each for EP. The Townies finished the regular
season 15-1 (18-6 overall) while capturing the Division
1-South Crown good enough for a second seed in the state
playoffs.

LaSalle at East Providence (Playoffs)
Townies Outlast Rams;
Win In 16 Innings
The East
Providence Townie Softball Team showed their mettle as they
downed the surging LaSalle Rams at Pierce Field on Friday.
After LaSalle scored an earned run in the top of the 16th
inning, EP scored twice in the bottom to win the marathon.
With one out in the last of the 16th inning, Sandy Levesque
worked a walk. Pinch runner Chelsey Vallante then replaced
Levesque on the base paths. Nicole Durand followed with a
single that moved Vallante to second. After a wild pitch
that moved Vallante and Durand up a base, Laura King lifted
a fly ball into the right center gap that would easily score
Vallante on a tag up from third. Instead, the Rams right
and center fielders collided allowing both Townie runners to
score giving the Townies an exciting comeback. EP played
with heart toughness, and intensity throughout the longest
game in EP Softball history. With the win, the Townies will
play North Kingstown in a loser's bracket quarterfinal game
at Notte Park. Amanda Shattuck went the distance for EP
striking out 16 Rams.

Townies Squander Lead
Lose 4-2
After Laura King's
catch and throw to gun down a Chariho baserunner at the
plate, the Townies looked like they would roll to the
winner's bracket semi-final game. However, a four error
sixth inning allowed the always tough Chargers to score four
runs and erase their two run deficit and win the
quarterfinal match-up. Danielle Normand's two-out two-run
single in the third inning gave the Townies an early lead.
Unfortunately after that, the Townie bats went silent and
the defense failed. EP will now face LaSalle in the loser's
bracket.

Townies Win Division
I-South; Blank NK 2-0
The East
Providence Softball Team won its second division title in
the last four years finishing the regular season with a team
best 15-1 record. EP will earn a buy into the quarterfinal
round of the state playoffs for the third consecutive year,
every year since the bye has been given. Marissa
Savastano's two-run triple into the right centerfield gap
provided all the run support Amanda Shattuck would need.
Shattuck pitched her 10th shutout of the season allowing
only two hits. The Townie defense was solid as it bailed
out an uncharacteristically wild Shattuck (5 BB's) on three
different occasions. Although only tallying three hits, EP
hit the ball hard all day against super senior Maggie Feix
of NK. The Townies will play the winner of Chariho and

Townie Seniors Star On
Senior Day Beat SK 9-0
For Hilary
Johnson, Danielle Normand, Chelsey Vallante, Cat Robinson,
Marissa Savastano and Ashley Dumont it was a special day.
Playing in their last regular season home game, the six
veterans made their presence felt leading the Townies to a
six run first inning and a 9-0 pasting of the South
Kingstown Rebels. Hilary Johnson making her first league
start, made the most of her chance as she had a single, run
scored and two walks. Danielle Normand led the offense with
3 hits and an RBI. Fellow seniors Cat Robinson, Chelsey
Vallante and Marissa Savastano all pitched in with one hit
each. After the 6 run first inning, Molly Hawksley crushed
a three-run homerun in the second inning adding 5 RBI to her
impressive day behind the plate. Junior Amanda Shattuck
allowed only three hits while striking out 13.

Patriots
Cat Robinson's two-out single in
the 11th inning plated Molly Hawksley with the game winning
run as EP downed Pilgrim 2-1. Robinson, who had three hits
on the day, has been the spark EP has needed. Amanda
Shattuck picked up her 14th win of the season, five of the
wins coming in extra frames. Shattuck struck out 16
Patriots. In the 11th, Molly Hawksley hit a soft pop-up
that sure-handed Sam Hallam dropped. Liz Mellen followed
with a clean single to left and Robinson followed with the
eventual game winning hit. The Townies improved to 13-1 in
the regular season. The bats need to come alive real soon!!

Hawksley's Homerun Saves Townies
Molly Hawksley's 7th Inning two-out homerun ties game;
Townies win in 8 innings
Looking as lifeless as they ever
have, the East Providence Townie Softball Team was one
strike away from their second consecutive 1-0 loss of the
season. That all changed when Molly Hawksley hit a 1-2
pitch into the right center gap and beat the throw to the
plate for a game tying homerun. In the extra frame, Cat
Robinson who has ignited the Townies with a hot bat, hit a
sharp grounder that resulted in an over throw. Robinson
ended up on second base with no-one out. Robinson was
lifted for fellow senior Chelsey Vallante. Nicole Durand
put down a perfect sacrifice bunt moving Vallante to third
with one out. Michaela Johnson followed with a ground ball
to the shortstop who threw to first and the relay home was
too late as Vallante beat the throw giving the Townies an
improbable comeback win. The Townie bats need to come
alive.

Shattuck Strikes Out
20 Batters but Townies Lose 1-0 in 15 Innings
The Townie
Softball Team let every opportunity slip away and the
Westerly Bulldogs made the most of the few given to them.
Westerly which got only one runner to second base after 14
innings, came up big when given their second opportunity.
Samantha Shawn cracked a double to left center that scored
the lead off runner in the bottom of the 15th inning sending
EP to their first league defeat. Amanda Shattuck was the
tough luck loser. Shattuck struck out 20 hitters and
walked three while giving up only six hits. Offensively,
the Townies had
14 hits but stranded 13 runners in scoring position. EP
also played excellent defense committing zero errors over
the last two games (22 innings). Leading the offense was
Shattuck (4 hits), Liz Mellen (3 hits), Danielle Normand and
Molly Hawksley chipped in 2 hits each. The Townies play a
pivotal game against Chariho on Monday at Pierce Field.

but took control in the 5th inning on consecutive RBI

After getting only

inning, capped by Molly Hawksley's two run out-of-the-park

combined 13 for 21 with two doubles, two triples, and a
homerun for a total of 9 RBI. Lead off hitter Laura King
was 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 runs scored while Marissa
Savastano added 3 hits including a three-run triple in her
second hit of the first inning. Amanda Shattuck had 3 hits
and 2 RBI and Hawksley added two singles to her two-run
homerun. Also making huge contributions were Nicole Durand
2 for 2 and 2 runs scored, and Cat Robinson 2 for 2 with a
run scored. Danielle Normand added a triple and two RBI for
the 10-0 Townies. Shattuck also struck out 9 batters
en-route to her 11th win of the season.

Lions Continue Mastery
Over EP
Despite getting
their only hit of the game in the top of the 10th inning,
the Lincoln Lions defeated the Townies 2-1 in a non-league
game at Pierce Field. Amanda Shattuck was superb as the
tough luck loser. In 10 innings of work, Shattuck allowed
only one hit while striking out 16 batters. Unfortunately,
the Townies made two more mistakes than Lincoln that
resulted in their third loss of the season, all in
non-league play. In the second inning, a walk, a sacrifice,
a ground out, and a wild pitch accounted for Lincoln's 1-0
lead. EP came right back in the bottom of the frame as Liz
Mellen singled, moved to third on back to back passed balls
and scored on Tracy Curti's sacrifice fly. Neither team
really threatened to score until the bottom of the ninth as
Liz Mellen hit a two-out triple but was stranded. In the
top of the 10th, an error allowed the Lions to get the
go-ahead run on first. A sac bunt moved the runner to
second base and then scored on the only hit allowed by
Shattuck. The game marked the second time this year,
Shattuck lost a no-hitter in extra innings. |

Marissa Savastano
turned not one but two double plays getting EP out of two
mild jams as the Townies defeated Barrington 3-0. Savastano
also had both hits for the victorious Townies who improved
to 9-0 in Division I-South. In the seventh inning after an
infield single, Danielle Normand fielded a grounder and made
a perfect flip to Savastano, who relayed the throw to first
baseman Traci Curti to end the game. Earlier, in the third
inning with a runner on first, Amanda Shattuck fielded a
ground ball and threw to Savastano who then turned the
inning ending double play. Liz Mellen also made two
excellent catches for EP in centerfield. Amanda Shattuck,
allowed only two infield singles as she improved to 10-0 on
the year with 7 shutouts.

Skippers 2-1 in 12 Innings
Nicole Durand's
suicide squeeze brought home Danielle Normand with the game
winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning. After NK
scored an unearned run in the third inning on back to back
errors, Molly Hawksley delivered a clutch two out hit in the
bottom of the sixth inning that sent the game into extra
frames. Two of the best hurlers in the state, Amanda
Shattuck and Maggie Feix, duelled for the next six innings
dominating the opposing batters. Shattuck had a no hitter
through 11 innings before Jeannie Records
connected with a shot to left field. After scoring what
seemed the go ahead run on an inside-the-park homerun, EP
appealed that the runner had missed second base and was
ruled correct (Thanks MS and DS). In the bottom of the
12th, Danielle Normand led off with a double to right
field. Molly Hawksley walked and Lizzie Mellen had a bunt
single setting up Durand's perfect suicide squeeze.
Shattuck struck out 14 batters and allowed only the single
in the 12th. Molly Hawksley had two of EP's 5 hits and
played stellar defense. Normand and Marissa Savastano also
starred defensively for the 8-0 Townies.

Winning Track
The Townies scored
three runs in the top of the third inning behind Marissa
Savastano (suicide squeeze), Amanda Shattuck, and Danielle
Normand's consecutive RBI singles. On the mound, Shattuck
cruised along through six innings allowing only one hit
until the Chargers stormed back in the seventh inning to tie
the game and send it into extra frames. In the eighth,
Shattuck led off with a bomb to left field legging out a
triple. Chelsey Vallante, pinch running for Shattuck,
scored two batters later on Molly Hawksley's sacrifice fly
to center. EP improved its league record to 5-0 with the
victory.

Canes Humble
Overconfident Townies
The Warwick Vets
Softball Team, in just their second year of fast-pitch
competition, outplayed, out hit, and out hustled the
previously unbeaten Townies in a non-league game on Friday.
EP committed five errors in the game, one more than their
total of their previous five games combined. The Canes
embarrassed the Townies at their own game as they ran,
bunted, and played very aggressively in the rout.

Amanda Shattuck's
solo homerun to deep left field sealed the Townies 4-0 win
over previously undefeated Westerly on Thursday. EP took
advantage of two dropped third strikes in the third inning
to take a 3-0 lead. Shattuck's bomb gave the Townies an
insurance run they wouldn't need. Danielle Normand added
two hits and an RBI for the 4-0 Townies. Both Shattuck and
the Bulldogs' Samantha Shawn struck out 9 batters each.

Providence Softball Team defeated Barrington 7-0 in the

with three hits (3B,2B,1B). Amanda Shattuck had two hits
and an RBI while Nicole Durand(3B, RBI) Sandy Levesque(2

March

BayView at East Providence (Scrimmage)
The Townies' second scrimmage was
better than their first, but was still marred with mental
errors and a lack of hitting. Amanda Shattuck and Molly
Hawksley each had two hits and Danielle Normand added a two
out two-run triple to lead EP's offense. The Townies have a
lot of work ahead of them. |
March

St. Ray's at East Providence (Scrimmage)
The first scrimmage of the season
was a quick one as Nicole Durand's double to right center
was the lone hit for EP in their preseason opener. The
Townies struck out a combined 16 times in 7 innings of
play. Mental errors, lack of communication, and virtually
no contact at the plate were the story. |
