Matt Martin (once again) Named Rhode Island Wrestler of the Year
The Rhode Island Wrestling Coaches Association held their annual awards banquet at Wrights Farm in Burrilville, where Matt Martin was named Rhode Island Wrestler of the Year. This is second time that Matt was presented the honor after taking home the mighty large trophy his sophomore year.

Another Townie received an important honor at the banquet as Tim Daft (class of 1984 and brother of Assistant Principal Ed Daft) was named Rhode Island Wrestling Coach of the Year. Coach Daft led Exeter-West Greenwich to a league championship.

Four other Townie wrestlers earned all-league honors including Pete Charron, Kevin Dias, and Chris Grilo. State Champion Greg Amoroso (also President of the EPHS National Honor Society) also was recognized as pat of the Academic All State team.

Season Comes To An End
Matt Martin came one win short All-American status at the High School Senior Nationals in Cleveland, Ohio last week. Matt caught the eventual National Champion in his first match of the tournament, losing a heart-breaker after leading for much of the match . (Matt is the only wrestler to have had the champ on his back all season.)

Matt also matched up with old friend and rival Nathan Myers of  Bishop Hendricken (see the Jan. 9th news) and came out on top, avenging his January loss. Congratulations on a great career!

Champs Prepare For Nationals
Matt Martin and Greg Amoroso have kept on practicing for the National High School Senior Wrestling Championship with the help of some Townie veterans. Brian Ferreira and Nathan Faria (1998) have been helping Greg and Matt prepare for the March 28-30, 2003 tournament in Akron, Ohio.  There has been some great wrestling in the room over the past week as there are seven State and two New England titles among them. Good luck, Greg and Matt!

Wrestling Season In Full Swing
The East Providence High School Wrestling team spent a full day on the mats at Somerset High School on Saturday. EP took on Somerset, Silver Lake, and Brockton at the annual Massachusetts event. The Townies handily defeated Brockton, but dropped close matches to Somerset and Silver Lake.

Several team members had the chance to wrestle in varsity positions and improvement has been seen in many areas. With league matches starting next week, the young Townie team looks to continue last year's winning ways.

In other news, congratulations go out to the Super Bowl champion Townie Football team. Senior Liem Nguyen, captain of the Townie Football squad, is back on the mat having helped his team to an impressive second half comeback over Lasalle. The Townie wresting squad is happy to finally be at full strength with the return of the football team members.

Senior Chris Grillo is back on the mat for the Townies and looking impressive.

Freshman Bobby Blakely has started off strong for the Townies.
