Five EP wrestlers earn a trip to the New Englands - Charest wins
Dan Charest won the State Championship at the 215 lb. weight class with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Jim Bridges of Cumberland. Dan becomes Coach Galligan's eighth State Champion.

After giving up an early takedown, Danny fought back as he took the lead in the third period and cruised his way to the gold medal. Nursing a sprained ankle he received in practice on Wednesday, Danny capped a fantastic season and his enthusiasm was apparent to the 500 plus crowd at Rhode Island College.

Anthony Couitt and Eli Dib also made their way to the finals after posting come from behind victories in the semi-finals. Eli earned his way into the center ring by defeating Andrew Palin of Woonsocket with a last second takedown. In the finals, Eli matched up with Eduardo Hopp of Central. In his first trip to the State Finals, Eli came out with the silver medal, but earned the respect of his teammates and coaches as Eli has worked harder than any team member to get where he is today. - Way to go, Eli!

Tony Couitt also fought his way into the finals with a thrilling last second takedown in the semi-finals. In the championship, Tony matched up against rival Josh Mason of Westerley. Mason outlasted Tony 3-2 in a hard-fought match. Tony capped off an extraordinary season and his contribution to the team will be felt for years to come as his hard work and leadership are a model to younger team members. Tony plans to win the New Englands.

In the 171 lb. class, Matt Travers finally showed off the talent that everyone knew was waiting to come out. Matt took home the bronze medal by defeating John Baccaire of Cranston West. Matt outlasted Baccaire 3-2 and picked a great time to peak!

Coming into the State Tournament, Coach Galligan knew that five wrestlers should place in the top six. Heavyweight Damian Almada was a question mark. Although Damian fought hard all year and came out with a positive dual-meet mark, some late season losses made one wonder if Damian would bounce back in the States. Like, Matt Travers, Damian picked the right time to peak as he outlasted Kurt Harel from Coventry in the consolation finals and took home a bronze medal and a trip to the New Englands. Along the way, Damian avenged the regular season loss to Steve Mendozi of La Salle to make his way to third place.

So the Townies finished fourth in the Rhode Island. Coach Galligan and Coach Sal will take five wrestlers to the New Englands next weekend in New Haven. Stay tuned to see just how far the Townies go in 2004.

Townies gear up for States
The EP Wrestling team finished off its season on Saturday with a win and a loss. The Townies easily handled an understaffed Burrillville team, but dropped a match to North Kingstown. Earlier in the week, the Townies' fate was sealed when Lasalle beat EP 35-30 at Barrington. This match put the Townies in second place in Division 1A.

Other exciting events last week went the Townies way. Sophomore Brian Partington made his way into the Finals of the JV States and Sophomore Steven Gomes won the tournament and took home a shiny gold medal. Sophomore Ian Birchell showed some serious guts and walked away with a few wins and a sixth-place finish.

On the same day, five 9th-graders competed in the Freshman States. Josh Lombardi and Tom Speaks were champions, while Jared Silva took second place. Ryan Tattrie, and Joe McMahon took 3rd.

So now the Townies get ready this week for the State Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at Rhode Island College. EP has a good number of top-seeded wrestlers. Look for Dan Cherest (215), Tony Couitt (189), Eli Dib (119), Josh Lombardi (145) and Bob Blakely (135) to go deep into the tournament. Matt Travers (171), Damian Almada (HWT), Lou Mercier (125), and Nick Andreozzi (112) could also do some damage. Chris Enos (103), Luke Gomersall (140), Jared Silva (130), Tom Speaks (160), and Rich Dellafamine (152) will have to step up in order for the Townies to be in contention for the team title.

Unlike past seasons, there is no favorite going into this year's State Tournament. Strong teams from La Salle, Cranston East, Hendricken, and South Kingstown will give the Townies a fight for the top spot. Good luck and congratulations on a great season, so far...

Couitt wins All-star tournament
EP brought five wrestlers to the RI Coaches Association All-star Tournament and all five won matches. Anthony Couitt took home the gold at 189 lbs., while Eli Dib (119 lb.) and Josh Lombardi (145 lb.) placed second. Dan Cherest lost a hard-fought match in the semis, but battled for third along with Bob Blakely, who also placed third.

Next up is the match - La Salle on Saturday, February 17th.

EP back on track
The Townies bounced back from a tough loss to Cranston East by handily defeating Coventry 55-9. The Townies only lost 3 matches (3 close matches). Brian Partington came back from a rough first period to pin his opponent at the 119 lb. class.

The Townies have a break from Rhode Island competition for a few weeks, but will match up against La Salle on February 17, in what might be the match to determine the A-2 Champions.

Townies take first loss
After an impressive weekend at Warwick (in which the Townies won a tournament and then returned for three dual meet victories), EP was finally stopped short by defending State Champs Cranston East, dropping the match by a score of 37-31.

January 18, 2004
EP wins Warwick Tournament
The similarities between the 2004 season and the 2002 season are starting to rack up as the Townies took another tournament victory at Warwick. Despite the fact that there are four freshmen in the starting line-up, the Townies have compiled an undefeated season as well as two tourney victories.

Dan Charest and Tony Couitt edged their opponents to take home gold medals, while Elias Dibb made his way into his first tournament finals, and took home a second place prize. Bobby Blakely, Josh Lombardi, Nick Andreozzi, and Matt Travers placed third.

January 15, 2004
Townies continue to roll
The EPHS wrestling team improved to 8-0 with a 30-28 victory over Bishop Hendricken. The upper weights came through again, as the Townies took the last four weight classes. Anthony Couitt's pin at 189 gave the Townies the push they needed to edge Hendricken.

January 10, 2004
Townies 7-0
Some tough grappling has helped the young Townie wrestling team to a 7-0 record. Victories over Johnston, Westerly, and Mount Pleasant have brought EP to the heart of the season as a contender for a division crown. While the proven veterans have held their own, several young wrestlers, including freshmen Jared Silva, Tommy Speaks, Josh Lombardi, and Joe McMahon have stepped up for the Townies. The next four matches, however, will be the toughest of the season.

Coach Galligan is pleased with the direction the season has gone thus far. While the State Tournament is still seven weeks away, the Townies appear to moving in a positive direction.

EP Tops EWG
The Townies avenged last season's loss to Exeter-West-Greenwich with a 45-30 victory. Nick Andreozzi (103), Joe McMahon (145), Tony Couitt (189), and Dan Cherest (215) pinned for the Townies. EP is now 4-0 against Rhode Island competition.

Champs again at Belmont
Townie wrestlers came up big again at the annual Belmont Tournament. Nick Andreozzi (103), Josh Lombardi (140), Anthony Couitt (189), and Dan Cherest (215) took home gold medals and led the Townies to another first place trophy.

Townies pick up three victories
The East Providence High School Wrestling team won all three of its matches in the annual Christmas Tournament. Victories over Smithfield, Toll Gate, and Cranston West put the Townies at 3-0 versus Rhode Island competition.
